Maple Sugaring Open House- 10 am session
Schiff Nature Center
339 Pleasant Valley Road, Mendham, 07945

Come to Schiff to discover and participate in a hands-on demonstration of maple sugar production with members of Schiff's educational staff and Board. The tradition of maple sugaring began centuries ago with the Native Americans and early settlers and continues today as homeowners learn to identify, tap, process the sap of Maple trees, and enjoy the many distinct flavors and grades of syrup.

Families are invited to experience the entire maple sugaring process from finding and tapping the tree, to viewing the evaporation of sap, to sampling the final product. Join us at the Nature Center for this 2 hour program at 10 am and 12 pm. The educational presentation will illustrate the history of maple sugaring, the seasonal life cycle of the sugar maple tree, and provide an overview of the live demonstration. Following the educational program, we will tap a tree near the Nature Center then take a short hike to the Pole Barn where the evaporation and tasting will take place. Once at the Pole Barn attendees can take part in a taste test to identify the real thing. Those who desire to continue hiking can see the working maple grove with a self guided tour.

Please arrive at the Nature Center 15 minutes before the program('s) start time and dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Boots are recommended as the trails can be wet, muddy, and/or covered by snow. This program is for ALL ages and is FREE to Schiff members. Non- member fee is $3 per person or $10 for a family of 4.
