Woodcock Walk
Schiff Natural Lands Trust & Schiff Nature Preserve
Parking lot (approximatly) between 220-230 Thomas Rd, Mendham, 07945

Join a naturalist to experience the seasonal mating display of the woodcock. Also known as the timberdoodle, Labrador twister, night partridge, and bog sucker, the male woodcock's evening display flights are one of the magical natural sights of springtime. He gives buzzy peent calls from a display area on the ground, then flies upward in a wide spiral. As he gets higher, his wings start to twitter. At a height of 200-350 feet the twittering becomes intermittent, and the bird starts to descend. He zigzags down, chirping as he goes, then lands silently (near a female, if she is present). Once on the ground, he resumes peenting and the display starts over again. Member fee is $10. Non- member fee is $15. This is an outdoor program for those age 16 and above. Guests are to meet our naturalist at the Thomas Rd parking lot/entrance to the McVickers Preserve. Advance registration and payment required. Directions will be sent upon advance registration.
