Maple Sugaring Demonstration Day (3/2, 9:30am)
Schiff Nature Preserve
339 Pleasant Valley Road (Use 339 Schiff Dr in your GPS), Mendham, 07945

The public and groups are welcome to come to Schiff to experience a hands-on demonstration of maple sugar production with members of Schiff's educational staff and Board. The tradition of maple sugaring began centuries ago with the Native Americans and early settlers and continues today as participants learn to identify, tap, and process the sap of Maple trees. Join us at the Nature Center for this 1 1/2-hour program at 9:30 am, 11:30 am, and 1:30 pm. The educational presentation will explain the history of maple sugaring, the seasonal life cycle of the sugar maple tree, and how 100% real maple syrup is made starting with identifying a maple tree through tapping the tree. Following the educational program we will see the wood-fired evaporator in action turning the sap into the final sweet product. The best part is tasting fresh syrup made from our own Schiff maple trees. The day includes a Maple Baked Goods Sale so bring some cash to buy some treats in support of Schiff! An optional two-mile field walk to the working maple grove will be offered to see the taps and collection operation. Please arrive at the Nature Center 15 minutes before the start time and dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Boots are recommended as the trails can be wet, muddy, and/or covered by snow. This program is FREE to all Schiff members. Non- member fee is $8 per person. Please register and pay in advance to secure your time slot. Seating is first come, first served. This program will be held rain or shine. Should conditions include extreme wind, cold, or ice, the program will be cancelled. Advance registration ensures that you receive weather cancellation notices.

Woodcock/Timberdoodle Watch
Mt. Paul Preserve
Mt. Paul Road, Chester, 07930

Woodcocks, otherwise known as Timberdoodles, are a fascinating bird that migrate back to wetlands in late February/early March to establish territory and find a mate. Superbly camouflaged against the leaf litter, the brown-mottled American Woodcock walks slowly along the forest floor, probing the soil with its long bill in search of earthworms. Unlike its coastal relatives, this plump little shorebird lives in young forests and shrubby old fields across eastern North America. Its cryptic plumage and low-profile behavior make it hard to find except in the springtime at dawn or dusk, when the males show off for females by giving loud, nasal peent calls and performing dazzling aerial displays. Attendees will be on the lookout and keenly listening to see if we can catch some Woodcock males performing their mating dance! Schiff has the perfect habitat at the Mount Paul Preserve, adjacent to Mendham Township's Burnett Brook Preserve. This program is recommended for ages 10 and up. No pets, please. Members fee is $10/person. Non- member fee is $15/person. Pre-registration ensures that you receive weather cancellation notices.

On June 23, we look forward to hosting Maribyrd & The Wooden Nickle Band. Affectionately described by her peers as "NJ's Joni Mitchell", Maribyrd is a singer/songwriter, born and raised in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of Northern NJ. Her live performances range from intimate and acoustic, to dynamic full bands, and everything in between. As a recording artist Maribyrd has released 3 albums, (available on CD and all of the usual streaming platforms, links can be found at www.maribyrd.com). She will be joined by Christina Alessi, who fronts The Toll Collectors, one of the many projects Byrd is involved with. They will be backed by The Wooden Nickel Band, a rotating lineup of some of the finest musicians NJ has to offer.

These concerts will be held in a large outdoor Amphitheatre setting that requires guests to arrive by 3:30 pm to allow for the 30-minute walk up to the venue. Guests may BYOB, snacks, and pillows for your comfort. Seating capacity and parking are limited, so carpooling is suggested. Advance ticket purchases are required. Current Member fee is $20. Schiff (new and renew) membership and MITW ticket bundle pricing is $65. Non- member fee is $25. Ticket proceeds directly support Schiff and the musicians.
