Come Out to Play, Discover, Learn!

Effective July 1, Schiff will resume offering educational and passive recreational programs. Several changes to how we operate our programs have been put in place to protect our staff and guests and reduce the likelihood of the spread of COVID-19. Please note and plan to cooperate with the following changes:

  • 24 hour advance pre registration for our programs will be required online.
  • Most of our programs will be held outdoors, temporarily.
  • Programmers will greet guests at the kiosk.
  • Capacities for all programs will be reduced to allow for 6 ft social distancing indoors and on hikes/outdoor programs.
  • Face coverings will be required to participate.
  • Please do not shake hands or hug, instead enjoy an elbow or foot "bump".

Guests are encouraged to have hand sanitizer on their person.

RENT A NATURALIST
Generally curious about our preserve, it's history, our plants, and the many animals that live on the preserve? Curious about the trees you've seen on your many hikes on the property? Our naturalist can answer those questions and more when you Rent a Naturalist for a one hour guided nature walk at Schiff Nature Preserve. Social distancing and face coverings are required. Limit 1 family per appointment. Cost $50/hour. Contact us at to arrange a mutually agreed upon time and date for your guided nature walk.

Full Moon Hike

If you have never had the opportunity to do some night hiking, then don't miss this as it's an altogether different experience. Schiff's Full Moon Hikes are an excellent opportunity to see our beautiful landscape by the light of the moon. Discover the magic of hiking at night while the moon is at its fullest, when even the most familiar trails reveal sights and sounds, they only share with the cool, quiet night. This 2 mile, 1 ½ hour hike is perfect for all experience levels, but guests should feel comfortable walking on uneven terrain. Guests are advised to wear hiking boots, weather appropriate attire, and bring headlamps to have on hand. Member fee is $10 per person. Non-member fee is $15 per person. Guests are asked to have masks on hand. These walks are very popular, so early, advance registration and payment are required to confirm your place.

Forest Bathing Walk

Please join us to experience Schiff in a new way! Forest Bathing is a well-being practice inspired by the Japanese tradition of Shinrin- Yoku. Slowing down in nature is combined with prompts, called invitations, to help participants use their senses to connect with the natural world. Research has shown that forest bathing can have numerous health benefits, lowering stress and improving cardiovascular and immune function. Join Elizabeth, an ANFT Certified Forest Therapy Guide, dressed for the weather with sunscreen/ bug spray, comfortable shoes and water. The walk will last 2 hours at a leisurely pace over varied terrain. This program is ideal for adults and teens able to remain quiet and still for extended time. This is an all weather event with the exception of thunderstorm, extreme wind, ice or wind chill temperature warnings. In the event of a cancellation, advance registration will ensure you receive a weather cancellation notice within 24 hours of the program start time. Member fee is $20. Non- member fee is $25. Advance registration and payment is required 24 hours in advance. No dogs, please. Guests are asked to have face coverings on their person.

Sunday Morning Fitness Hike

Join us for a brisk 5- mile hike over varied terrain across Schiff Nature Preserve. Hikers meet at McVickers Brook parking lot at 239 Pleasant Valley Road, Mendham. Vaccinated dogs on leash are welcome. Free to members. Non- member fee is $10. This program is an all weather event with the exception of thunderstorm or extreme wind chill temperature warnings. In the event of a cancellation, advance registration will ensure you receive a weather cancellation notice within 24 hours of the program start time. Advance registration and payment is required 24 hours in advance. Guests are asked to have face coverings on their person.

Santa's Wild Home

Come celebrate the magic and wonder of the holiday season as we explore what life is like for our wild neighbors in the North Pole! Children will discover the differences between reindeer and the local white-tailed deer, in addition to learning about other animals who call the North Pole home. Creating edible ornaments for wildlife, playing games and making "reindeer food" to sprinkle on the lawn Christmas Eve are just a few of the fun and festive activities we have in store! This is a drop-off program for children ages 6-9 (1st-3rd). Parents must provide health and emergency contact information. This program is an all-weather event so dress accordingly. In the event of a severe storm or extreme cold/wind warnings the program will be cancelled. This program requires a minimum of 4 participants to run. Member fee is $12 per child, Non- member fee is $15 per child.

Volunteer Work Session
Schiff Natural Lands Trust & Schiff Nature Preserve

The Conservation and Stewardship Committee welcomes your involvement in maintaining our trails, open space, and buildings. Meet at the Nature Center for two hours of land stewardship work. Each work session provides the community an opportunity to work side by side with Schiff staff and Board members in a variety of hands-on projects. Depending on the season, we may be clearing trails, removing invasive species, planting native trees and shrubs, conducting building repairs, restoring fences and bridges, or raking out the Native Garden. Volunteers (16 and under with a parent) are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, bring sunscreen and bug spray as appropriate, and bring a beverage and snack in a backpack for hands free walking. Bring garden or work gloves. Tools provided by Schiff. Volunteers are asked to sign a waiver and may bring and use their own tools if they prefer. Please pre-register online so we can plan projects accordingly.

Winter Solstice Celebration

Join us as we say goodbye to autumn and welcome in the winter season on this longest night of the year. We will take an easy walk to the highest point at Schiff where you will hear tales of Winter Solstice traditions from around the world. The walk will be followed by a solstice fire, bringing light into the darkest of days. This program is appropriate for those age 6 and above and is an all weather event, so dress accordingly. In the event of a thunderstorm or extreme wind warning program will be cancelled. Advance registration required. S'mores packets will be provided, please advise us of any allergies upon registration. Flashlights recommended. All ages. Member fee is $10/person. Non- member fee is $15/person. Limited to 25 guests.

Singing Bowl Meditaton

Come and join us for a Himalayan Singing Bowl Meditation to restore and energize your spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical bodies. Singing bowls are said to have been in use since 560 BC. Singing bowls produce sounds which invoke a deep state of relaxation which naturally assists in entering into meditation. The Nature Center is the perfect location for quieting your mind, body, and spirit. The meditation begins with a relaxation protocol, followed by an intention setting protocol, and closing with a third eye opening protocol and a Chakra (energy centers) clearing and balancing protocol. Bring a yoga mat, two pillows and a blanket so you can relax and enjoy the soothing sound of the singing bowls comfortably. We have chairs for those of you who prefer to sit. Member fee is $30. Non- member fee is $35. Masks are optional indoors at this time. Advance registration and payment is required.
