Come Out to Play, Discover, Learn!

Effective July 1, Schiff will resume offering educational and passive recreational programs. Several changes to how we operate our programs have been put in place to protect our staff and guests and reduce the likelihood of the spread of COVID-19. Please note and plan to cooperate with the following changes:

  • 24 hour advance pre registration for our programs will be required online.
  • Most of our programs will be held outdoors, temporarily.
  • Programmers will greet guests at the kiosk.
  • Capacities for all programs will be reduced to allow for 6 ft social distancing indoors and on hikes/outdoor programs.
  • Face coverings will be required to participate.
  • Please do not shake hands or hug, instead enjoy an elbow or foot "bump".

Guests are encouraged to have hand sanitizer on their person.

RENT A NATURALIST
Generally curious about our preserve, it's history, our plants, and the many animals that live on the preserve? Curious about the trees you've seen on your many hikes on the property? Our naturalist can answer those questions and more when you Rent a Naturalist for a one hour guided nature walk at Schiff Nature Preserve. Social distancing and face coverings are required. Limit 1 family per appointment. Cost $50/hour. Contact us at to arrange a mutually agreed upon time and date for your guided nature walk.

Please join us for a day of land stewardship activities at 339 Pleasant Valley Road. Each Volunteer Day provides the community an opportunity to work side by side with Schiff staff and Board members in a variety of hands-on projects. Depending on the season, we may be removing brush and vines from trails, removing invasive species, conducting building repairs, restoring fences and bridges, or raking out the Native Garden. Volunteers (16 and under with a parent, please) are encouraged to dress in weather appropriate attire, wear hard toe shoes, bring sunscreen and bug spray, and bring a beverage and snack in a backpack for hands free walking. Walk-ins welcome. Fully vaccinated volunteers are asked to have a mask on hand for when social distancing is not possible. Unvaccinated volunteers are to wear masks. Please bring their own gloves. Tools owned and provided by Schiff will be cleaned before and after use and should not be shared that day between volunteers. Volunteers may bring and use their own tools if they prefer.

Full Moon Hike

If you have never had the opportunity to do some night hiking, then don't miss this as it's an altogether different experience. Schiff's Full Moon Hikes are an excellent opportunity to see our beautiful landscape by the light of the moon. Discover the magic of hiking at night while the moon is at its fullest, when even the most familiar trails reveal sights and sounds, they only share with the cool, quiet night. This 2 mile, 1 ½ hour hike is perfect for all experience levels, but guests should feel comfortable walking on uneven terrain. Guests are advised to wear hiking boots, weather appropriate attire, and bring headlamps to have on hand. Member fee is $10 per person. Non-member fee is $15 per person. Guests are asked to have masks on hand. These walks are very popular, so early, advance registration and payment are required to confirm your place.

Forest Bathing Walk

Please join us to experience Schiff in a new way! Forest Bathing is a well-being practice inspired by the Japanese tradition of Shinrin- Yoku. Slowing down in nature is combined with prompts, called invitations, to help participants use their senses to connect with the natural world. Research has shown that forest bathing can have numerous health benefits, lowering stress and improving cardiovascular and immune function. Join Elizabeth, a certified Forest Therapy Guide, dressed for the weather with sunscreen/ bug spray, comfortable shoes and water. The walk will last 2 hours at a leisurely pace over varied terrain. This program is ideal for adults and teens able to remain quiet and still for extended time. This is an all weather event with the exception of thunderstorm, extreme wind, ice or wind chill temperature warnings. In the event of a cancellation, advance registration will ensure you receive a weather cancellation notice within 24 hours of the program start time. Member fee is $25. Non- member fee is $30. Intended for our youngest stewards ages 3-5 with an adult, join a naturalist for outdoor story time and songs. We'll meet at the Nature Center and head up to Critter Cove to celebrate nature. How to Bring More Birds & Joy Into Your Backyard

Join Jim Walker from Wild Bird Unlimited for a presentation on the various ways to increase your burding population in your yard. The mission of Wild Birds Unlimited is to "connect people with nature and we do it with excellence." Catering to the backyard bird feeding hobby, Jim will share a powerpoint presentation that covers how to make the hobby of backyard bird feeding and sighting more productive. Examples of bird feeders, houses, and foods will be discussed while also allowing time for Q&A. This program is intended for adults only and will be held indoors in the Nature Center. Guests are asked to register and pay in advance and plan for mask use and socially distanced seating while indoors. Member fee is $8. Non- member fee is $12.

Our fun evening plans include playing animal trivia and roasting marshmallows amoungst the stars. Feel free to bring along a picnic dinner and drinks and we will provide the s'mores for dessert. Come and join us for a Himalayan Singing Bowl Meditation to restore and energize your spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical bodies. Singing bowls are said to have been in use since 560 BC. Singing bowls produce sounds which invoke a deep state of relaxation which naturally assists in entering into meditation. The Nature Center is the perfect location for quieting your mind, body, and spirit. The meditation begins with a relaxation protocol, followed by an intention setting protocol, and closing with a third eye opening protocol and a Chakra (energy centers) clearing and balancing protocol. Bring a yoga mat, two pillows and a blanket so you can relax and enjoy the soothing sound of the singing bowls comfortably. We have chairs for those of you who prefer to sit. Member fee is $30. Non- member fee is $35. All guests are asked to have masks on hand when indoors. Advance registration and payment is required.

Schiff's Music in the Woods concert series bring nature loving, hiking, and live music together. Join us for a unique outdoor opportunity for community, nature, and music all blended together for a lovely afternoon in the Amphitheatre. Bring your snacks, beverages, and perhaps a pillow for stadium bench seating comfort, wear comfortable walking shoes for the 20 minute walk up into the beautiful woods of the preserve. We will enjoy a wonderful afternoon of music and community featuring the Alex Radus Trio featuring Robbie sko. Alex Radus is known as a "sultry crooner" (City Paper) and "master guitarist" (Courier News), but his songwriting takes center stage, pairing whimsical and poignant storytelling with a genre-bending mix of Americana, swing, blues, folk and more. Radus has toured the country extensively, recorded multiple albums, and earned awards, nominations and critical acclaim for his songwriting, recording and performing. Radus' music has been featured on radio, TV and film, including Adolescence, directed by Ashley Avis (Black Beauty). His releases include Jewels & Tinware ("creative, original...perfect" - Steel Notes Magazine) and Love Me Like You Hate Me ("impressive...eerie, intense and wonderful" - Morning Call). A staple of the eastern PA music scene, Radus is a frequent performer at the region's best festivals and venues, including Musikfest, Godfrey Daniels, Steelstacks, World Cafe Live and more. Alex Radus Trio features Daniel Manchester (upright bass) and Charlie Heim (drums). Their upcoming album, Tributaries, was recorded live at the legendary Godfrey Daniels.

Advance ticket purchases are required. Parking is limited, so carpooling is strongly suggested. Plan to arrive at 3:30 pm to hike to the Amphitheatre. Environmental Book Club

Members of Schiff gather eight times per year to discuss a previously selected environmentally focused book together in the Nature Center of the Schiff Nature Preserve. Scouting Heritage Merit Badge Hike

Scout Troops, Scouting elders, and the public are invited to join us for a trip down memory lane, learning all about the history of Schiff as it pertains to the Boy Scouts of America. Join local historian, author, lecturer, and member of Schiff Natural Lands Trust's Board of Trustees, W. Barry Thomson for a narrated hike showcasing the rich and complex history of what is now the Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham. Attending the Historical Scouting Hike program will help scouts meet most of the necessary requirements for earning their "Scout Heritage Badge". (Criteria # 6 and 8 will not be met by attending this program.) Starting at the Nature Center, we will hike to the Brookrace manor house to gather in the ballroom for a visual slide presentation and to view scout artifacts that directly address several of the criteria for the merit badge. Schiff locations that directly relate to the "Scouting Era" include the Nature Center, Lake Therese, the former boathouse (now private residence), the manor house, the Great Meadow, Dan Beard's Cabin, Wood Badge Lodge, and the Amphitheater. Program is appropriate for middle school ages and up. Carpooling is strongly recommended for parking at the Nature Center is limited. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, weather appropriate clothes, and expect that the walking portions of the Historical Hike range in time from 7-15 minute spurts and will involve some incline. Troop Badge fee is $80 per Troop of 15. Individual adult member fee is $10. Individual child member fee is $8. Non- adult member fee is $12. Individual child non- member fee is $10. This is an all weather event with the exception of extreme weather such as thunderstorms, hi winds or heavy rain warrenting the rain date of October 9th. In the event of rain date use; guests will receive a rain date notification email within 24 hours of the program start time. Access to the Nature Center presents accessibility limitations. "Looking for a post hike activity? Interested in enjoying some live music? Bring your snacks, beverages, and perhaps a pillow for the final concert of this year's Music in the Woods season. This concert will occur indoors in the Nature Center. Join us from for a wonderful evening of music and community featuring Tom Rice, Terry Hemmer, and Jerry Cordasco. Tom and his band mates have been performing together for over 20 years - playing blues, rock and soul music locally and across the country. Usually playing as a full band with other musicians, they are looking forward to playing as a trio in the intimate setting of the Schiff Nature Center. Tom and friends are known to play an eclectic mix of 60's and 70's blues, soul, and rock n' roll- from the blues of Robert Johnson and Sonny Boy Williamson to favorite by The Band, Van Morrison, Little Feat, and Bob Dylan.

Singing bowls produce sounds which invoke a deep state of relaxation which naturally assists in entering into meditation. The Nature Center is the perfect location for quieting your mind, body, and spirit. The meditation begins with a relaxation protocol, followed by an intention setting protocol, and closing with a third eye opening protocol and a Chakra (energy centers) clearing and balancing protocol. Bring a yoga mat, two pillows and a blanket so you can relax and enjoy the soothing sound of the singing bowls comfortably. We have chairs for those of you who prefer to sit. Member fee is $30. Non- member fee is $35. All guests are asked to have masks on hand when indoors. Advance registration and payment is required.
