13th Annual Environmental Film Festival
Schiff Natural Lands Trust & Schiff Nature Preserve
339 Pleasant Valley Road (Use 339 Schiff Dr in your GPS), Mendham, 07945

A true community event, Schiff's Environmental Film Festival features inspiring environmental films and serves as a venue for community to gather, raises funds for Schiff, and promote learning and discussion of important environmental issues. Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, the proceeds from this event help Schiff in achieving its mission. We thank all our past attendees and sponsors.
The night of the festival, the Wood Badge Lodge is transformed into a wonderful Woodland Theatre. Winner of Best Short Documentary at Ashland Independent Film Festival and the Audience Award for Documentary Short at the Bend Film Festival, the feature, "Giants" tells the story of a neighborhood that fought to stop a developer from cutting down three massive Sequoia trees to build a house. The film brings a fresh look into local activism and highlights the importance of community organizing. Directed by Luz Carasa. Produced by Luz Carasa and Connor Stava.
After watching the films, Chris Neff, Director of Communications at NJ Audubon and Mendham's own celebrated wildlife photographer, will facilitate a discussion on the balancing act that is in play between proposed development and community and environmental interests. We look forward to Chris' expertise and insights and a lively discussion on how we can be sensitive to the pressures for development while also becoming informed on how to influence development.
This event is held outdoors and thus guests are encouraged to arrive early to allow time for registration, hike, or hayride to the venue, and are encouraged to pack a light dinner, beverages, and proper attire for comfort. Guests are asked to have face coverings for use during hayride and when social distancing is difficult. Student fee is $10. Member fee is $15. Non- member fee is $18. Advance registration and payment are required. In the event of the need to utilize the rain date of June 5, those registered will be contacted with 24 hours' notice.

Father's Day Historical Hike
Schiff Natural Lands Trust & Schiff Nature Preserve
339 Pleasant Valley Road (Use 339 Schiff Dr in your GPS), Mendham, 07945

Looking for a way to enjoy Father's Day with your beer, history, and Scout loving Dad? Schiff's Father's Day hike might be just what Dad was hoping for; a day spent with family hiking, reminiscing, and sipping........
Join local historian, author, and lecturer W. Barry Thomson on Saturday, June 18th for a narrated hike sharing the rich and complex history of what is now the Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham. Beginning with the history of the rural industrial district that developed along the North Branch of the Raritan River and McVickers Brook in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Father's Day Hike will begin at the Nature Center. Thomson's talk -- enhanced using archival photographs, various artifacts, and rare maps will then cover the early 20th century development of the 600-acre "Brookrace" estate by Richard and Julia Williams, including the family's stone manor house. In 1932, following Richard Williams' death, the "Brookrace" estate was transformed into the Mortimer L. Schiff Scout Reservation, which, for the next 48 years, served as the National Training Center for the Boy Scouts of America.

Ascending by foot up into the preserve, guests (21+, please) will be guided on a walking tour through various notable sections/highlights of the preserve until joining Schiff's Business Partner for a Greener Community member and Head Brewer and co-owner, Tim Pewitt of Wet Ticket Brewing in Rahway, NJ in the Amphitheater for a Beer Tasting. Tim will give a short talk about the importance of conservation as it relates to clean water and soil as the foundation for tasty beer.

Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, weather appropriate clothes, and expect that the walking portions of the Father's Day Hike range in time from 10-20 minute spurts and will involve some incline. This is an all-weather event except for extreme summer weather such as thunderstorms or heavy rain warnings, warranting cancellation. Upon cancellation, refunds will be issued automatically. Access to the Nature Center presents accessibility limitations. Parking is limited, so carpooling is strongly encouraged. Advance registration and payment are required 24 hours in advance. Member fee is $40. Non- member fee is $45. Capacity is limited to 50 for this event. Guests are asked to have face coverings on their person for when social distancing is impossible.

Music in the Woods- The Widely Grown
Schiff Natural Lands Trust & Schiff Nature Preserve
339 Pleasant Valley Road (Use 339 Schiff Dr in your GPS), Mendham, 07945

Looking to be in nature AND enjoy some live music? Schiff's Music in the Woods is a unique outdoor opportunity for community, nature, and music all blended together for a lovely afternoon in the Amphitheatre. Bring your snacks, (adult) beverages, and perhaps a pillow for stadium bench seating comfort, wear comfortable walking shoes for the 20 minute walk up into the beautiful woods of the preserve. We will enjoy a wonderful afternoon of music and community featuring The Wideley Grown-a fairly new Americana/Folk band from "one of Hudson County's most engaging singer-songwriters", James Calleo (NJ.com). Widely Grown is the inevitable sound that culminates from living a year without a permanent home. 2020 had James traveling cross-country with his wife and dog in a tiny Subaru. From camping in the Appalachian Mountains, to starry nights in Big Horn National Forest, and swimming in the cold waters of the Northern Pacific Coast, the pull towards Americana became as natural as the moon tugging at the tide. The year was spent without plugging in an electric guitar, and so the acoustic sound prevailed throughout. Since the trip across the divide states, James united with a widely grown band of musicians from across New Jersey to create the Widely Grown.

Advance ticket purchases are required. Parking is limited, so carpooling is strongly suggested. Guests are asked to have masks in hand. Plan to arrive at 3:30 pm to hike to the Amphitheatre. All ages. Member fee is $20. Non-member fee is $25. Proceeds from ticket sales directly support Schiff and the musicians. This event will occur shy of rain or thunderstorms. Refunds will automatically be processed in the event of a cancellation.
